Windows Mobile

Windows Mobile is a compact operating system combined with a suite of basic applications for mobile devices based on the Microsoft Win32 API. Devices which run Windows Mobile include Pocket PCs, Smartphones, and Portable Media Centers. It is designed to be somewhat similar to desktop versions of Window.

There are currently two choices for producing mobile software using a Windows operating system: ActiveSync on XP, and—for Vista—a new interface built upon ActiveSync technology, called the Windows Mobile Device Center (WMDC).

Photon is the next major revision to the Windows Mobile platform, and will likely be called Windows Mobile 6.0. In December 2005, Microsoft announced that the Smartphone and Pocket PC platforms will be merged for Photon but that the release is still several years away. Very little is currently known about Photon other than it is expected to have special design improvements and greatly improved battery life.

With the launch of Windows Mobile 6, Microsoft has yet again introduced a new naming convention for Windows Mobile devices.

Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC also known as Windows Mobile 6 Classic.

Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC Phone Edition also known as Windows Mobile 6 Professional.

Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone also known as Windows Mobile 6 Standard.
