Web clipping

Extracting static information from a Web site in order to display the data on a Web-enabled PDA. The idea behind Web clipping is to conserve the PDA's resources by extracting once any static data, such as graphics, logos, photos or even unnecessary text and storing that data on the PDA.

Web Clipping Applications used the network to process data. The Palm VIIx could download new Web Clipping applications wirelessly. The Palm VII series was later replaced by the Palm i705.

Web Clipping Applications (also called PQA) are Internet applications built for the Palm OS platform targeting PDA screens and fast data download.

How to connect online with more than half a thousand websites that have adapted the graphical environment and the content of your pages on small screens of the PDA. The Web clipping is faster than the usual Internet surfing, as it omits the loading of images and links.

One thing that PDA makers have done to make their devices work better for Internet access is a process called Web Clipping. Instead of downloading whole Web pages, Web Clipping slices out bits of text information and sends it through the airwaves to your PDA. News headlines, phone numbers, e-mail and other information can be transmitted this way.

A web clipping application, or Palm Query Application (PQA), is a program that allows you to request clippings from the Internet. In many ways, a web clipping is a kind of mini—web site that resides on a PDA.

A typical application contains an HTML form or list of hyperlinks that request additional information either locally–on the handheld computer–or remotely–on the Internet. A web clipping application can also be self-contained, a sort of HTML booklet with internal cross-references, formatting, and graphics.

You can download a number of different web clipping applications straight from the web — free of charge. One especially good site for downloading web clipping apps is www.palm.net/apps.
