Control System software that serves as a basis for a set of core applications and software for the operation of certain devices, such as a PDA. In the world of PDAs, it is noteworthy for its popular Palm operating system, as well as the Pocket PC version of Microsoft Windows.

As PDAs and mobile phones quickly combine into smartphones, Palm OS developers find that their favorite operating system is running behind the most mature smartphone operating system, Symbian OS. It is the foundation for programs to run on a PDA.
