MultiMedia Card and MultiMedia Memory Flash Card (MMC)

A MultiMediaCard (MMC) is a tiny memory card that uses flash memory to make storage portable among various devices, such as car navigation systems, cellular phones, eBooks, PDAs, smartphones, and digital cameras, music players, and video camcorders, and personal computers. MMC was jointly developed by SanDisk and Siemens AG/Infineon Technologies AG, who introduced the product in 1997.

About the size of a postage stamp, MMC weighs approximately two grams. This is similar to the Secure Digital (SD card), and smaller than older memory card formats, such as the SmartMedia card and CompactFlash (CF card). By October 2002, the MultiMediaCard offered a range of storage capacities up to 128 MB.

Memory Card Type I PCMCIA promoted by the association and developed by SanDisk, which, unlike Type II cards, just-for-now attributes of memory storage (flash and ROM).

The MMC Association uses "MultiMediaCard" instead of "Multimedia Card" or "MultiMedia Card". :This technology is an open standard available to any company who wants to improve upon it or develop products for it.

Secure Digital (SD) and MultiMediaCard expansion cards are high-capacity storage media that allow you to exchange data across different devices. The SD card additionally features a write-protect lock and faster read/write speed of up to 10 megabytes per second. You can use expansion cards to exchange files between your handheld and any computer equipped with a reader/writer device.

Usage:

  • Storing files in the proper directories on the card Using the card in your handheld—copying files to the card, deleting files, and beaming from the card.
  • Using the card in a reader/writer device—copying files to the card from your computer, and deleting files from the card.
  • Adding the required directories to a third-party card For additional information about expansion card features and usage, refer to your Palm handheld handbook http://www.palm.com/us/support/handbooks/sd_guide.pdf .

MultiMedia Memory Flash Card (MMC) is about the size of a postage stamp: 24 mm x 32 mm x 1.4 mm. It is slightly thinner than an SD Card and can be used in most the same applications. MMC uses a 1-bit serial interface, but the newer MMC plus allows transfers of 4 or sometimes even 8 bits at a time. The slightly thinner, pin-compatible MMC cards can be used in almost any device that supports SD cards if the software/firmware on the devices support them. The MultiMedia Memory Flash Card is an ultra-small, high storage solution for MP3 music players, digital video, cellular phones, and global positioning systems (GPS). A 64MB MultiMedia Memory Card holds 64 minutes of MP3 or about 40,000 book pages.
