Mobile Internet Kit (MIK)

Software for Internet connection to the PDA of the Palm brand. This software uses the built-in data capability of your mobile phone or modem to establish a connection to the Internet for your Palm so you can log on to your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to send and receive e-mail, send and receive short text messages, and access the Web. By the MIK, the Palm can connect with cables or infrared-to a modem or a web-enabled mobile GSM compatible. Such a combination allows the user to perform Web clipping on the Internet, and send and receive messages to mobile or e-mail.

The MIK requires for its operation on Palm OS 3.5 or higher and is not compatible with all Palm. If you have a GSM phone, you can compose short text messages on your Palm handheld and exchange them with other GSM phone users worldwide.

Delivered on CD-ROM, the Palm Mobile Internet Kit enables most Palm handheld computers supporting Version 3.5 of the Palm OS(R) platform to connect wirelessly to the Internet using a compatible data-enabled GSM mobile phone.(1) For those upgradable Palm handhelds that do not already have Palm OS 3.5 (the Palm III, Palm IIIx and Palm V series handhelds), the Palm Mobile Internet Kit provides the added advantage of upgrading the OS to accommodate the new wireless applications and services.

The Palm Mobile Internet Kit uses Palm's innovative web clipping technology to gather information from the Internet, displaying it simply and quickly. This makes it ideally suited to anyone who needs swift access to web-based information. More information about the Palm Mobile Internet Kit can be foundat http://www.palm.com/software/mik/.

To use the Mobile Internet Kit, first upgrade your handheld (if necessary) to Palm OS 3.5 with the included software. Connect your handheld to a data-enabled mobile phone or modem using a cable (sold separately) or the infrared port.

You can then log on to your ISP using the mobile phone or modem to get e-mail from Yahoo!, Earthlink, Hotmail, or any other POP3/IMAP4 account. (POP3 and IMAP4 are protocols for receiving e-mail, and POP3 is currently more common and used by many ISPs.) Because both AOL and MSN use proprietary e-mail protocols, neither service is supported by the Palm Mobile Internet Kit.
