Implementation of synchronization between the PDA and a personal computer. That is, updates the file system between the two media via the synchronization process. The ActiveSync is included with the software package standard Pocket PC operating system from Microsoft. Phones with features such as  PC synchronization via ActiveSync technology help ensure that contact, calendar and e-mail information are the same on a person's smart phone and PC. "Synchronizing" quickly and easily transfers your contacts, e-mail, calendar and other files between your mobile device and your PC.

Before synchronizing, it's important to know which version of Windows your PC is running. Your synchronization settings will be managed through ActiveSync if you have Windows XP or earlier; Windows Mobile Device Center if you have Vista.

Exchange ActiveSync pushes email, voice mail, fax, calendar, contacts, and tasks to a mobile device as soon as they arrive at the server. This means that, even while traveling, employees are never out of touch.

As with the "all-Windows" solution, ActiveSync uses data compression to speed transmission (and reduce cellular fees), and makes use of the new Service Pack 2 features for provisioning and securing clients.

Current ActiveSync licenses include DataViz, which offers an ActiveSync-based client application for a range of non-Windows handhelds, Palm for several Treo models, Motorola, Nokia, Sony-Ericsson, and Symbian.

Microsoft ActiveSync is not compatible with Microsoft Windows CE Version 1.0x due to the vast differences between communication methods, and file formats.
