Hotspot (Wi-Fi)

An area in which an access point provides public wireless broadband network services to mobile users through a WLAN (wireless local area network). Hotspots are often located in heavily populated places such as airports, hotels, coffee shops, libraries and convention centers. see also Wi-Fi.

The JiWire WiFi Hotspot Finder for AvantGo is an easy-to-use handheld application that gives you the flexibility to find hotspots anywhere you are, even when you're offline.

You can even plan ahead for your next trip. Simply enter the addresses and zip codes where you ll be traveling, and each time you sync your handheld, you ll have the most up-to-date hotspot information.

The Hotspot Finder works with any device that's compatible with AvantGo's mobile software for handhelds and PDAs.

A commercial hotspot may feature:

  •  A captive portal that users are redirected to for authentication and payment.
  •  A payment option using credit card, Paypal, iPass, or other payment service.
  •  A walled garden feature that allows free access to certain sites.
  • Many services, such as Boingo, SurfAndSip, Nomadix, and NetnearU provide these payment services to hotspot providers, for a monthly fee. ZoneCD is a GNU/Linux LiveCD that provides payment services for hotspots who wish to deploy their own service.
