Bluetooth Synchronization

Devices that implement the IrMC specification permit synchronization of data sources, such as calendars and address books. Many Bluetooth- enabled cell phones have this feature. More modern devices implement the SyncML specification, which requires a networking connection.

The Blackberry desktop manager’s Bluetooth sync is not compatible with any third party Bluetooth drivers. It turns out you must use XP’s native Bluetooth drivers in order to get the Desktop Manager Connection Settings to properly recognize that you have Bluetooth at all.

The SYNC profile is used in conjunction with GOEP to enable synchronization of calendar and address information (personal information manager [PIM] items) between Bluetooth enabled devices. Bluetooth synchronization has been standard on a tremendous number of phones released over the past 3 years. Simply follow these steps to see if your phone will work:

  1. Install the add-on.
  2. Click the 'SW' button on the bottom right corner of Firefox.
  3. Click 'Search for SyncML devices'. It takes about 10 seconds to find the devices and a few more to determine what services are available.
  4. If your device is found and can sync it is supported and will be added to the list (Bluetooth SyncML Devices)
